The First Call

Everybody gets one.

One call. No discovery call before it (the first call is the work). Afterward you get an invoice, and you fill in the number: what the call was worth to you, decided by you, including zero. That's not a trick. That's the deal.

What the first call is

What you can bring

Any use is a good use.

Pitch feedback. A hangup you want worked through. A bullshit-sniff on a vendor or an offer somebody made you. The deal sitting on the table right now. The hard call you've been carrying alone. Bring the real situation and the honest answers, and we'll work the thing that's actually live.

How the call runs: three questions

What are you looking for?

The long-term ask.

What do you need?

The short-term read.

What can we do?

The immediate action.

You leave with all three answered. That's attainable reality, and it's the first thing you get.

No theater

No discovery call before the call. No small-talk gauntlet at the top of it. No performance of rapport before anyone says a true thing. If you've spent your career translating yourself for rooms that weren't built for you... you just felt something relax. That's on purpose. I take this seriously, even when we're having fun, and I'll expect the same from you.

The rules of working together are written down, both directions. Read The Handshake →

If I invited you here

I'm here to help (and to sell to you). Not here to buy.

If you pitched me and I pointed you to this page, here's the straight version: I'm not your buyer. But I do this call with anyone, including you, and it's real help on whatever you're actually working on (including the pitch you just sent me). You'll pay what it was worth to you afterward, and zero is an allowed answer. If that sounds better than one more unanswered follow-up, book it.

How it works

1 · Book

Pick a time. Bring the thing that's most live.

2 · Talk

We work it. Three questions, real answers, no theater.

3 · You set the number

You get the invoice after, and you fill in the amount. What it was worth to you, including $0.

30 to 80 minutes. We work on the real thing, not a get-to-know-you. You get the recording, same rights as me. Afterward you name what it was worth, and zero is a number. All the risk is on me.

Rather write it down first?

Just tell me what's going on.

Response time: I respond personally. Usually within 1–2 business days. Not an autoresponder, not an assistant. Me.

If You Know Someone

Know someone who could benefit? Send them my way.

Making an introduction costs you something if it goes badly, so here is my end of it. They get the same first call everyone gets. If I am not the right fit I will say so and point them somewhere better. Your name comes back to you intact.

I will take care of both of you.

The Fine Print

I take on a limited number of engagements at a time. If I'm full, I'll tell you, and roughly when I'll have room. I won't string you along.

If after the first call I don't think I'm the right fit, I'll say so directly and point you toward something or someone that is. That's not a loss. That's the job.
